Douglas Shire sport has risen to new heights this season claiming two rugby league titles; the AFL Cairns premiership and within reach of retaining the FNQ First Division soccer crown.

Last weekend, the Port Douglas Crocs beat South Cairns 99-66 to win their fourth straight premiership; the Port Douglas-Mossman Sharks beat the Innisfail Leprechauns 30-24 in back-to-back season wins; and the Sharks Reserve A Grade accounted for Cairns Brothers 32-26.

The Douglas Dragons soccer team will now have to wait out this weekend before knowing who they’ll meet in the final. Mareeba and Atherton will be contesting the elimination final and the winner will meet the Dragons on 4 October. The Dragons beat Mareeba 3-1 in last year’s final and will be looking for back-to-back wins.

Although Douglas Shire Council has yet to advise if there will be a parade to salute the teams – one suspects they waiting for the result of the soccer final – they were full of praise for what has been achieved this season.

“Douglas Shire Council would like to congratulate its premiership winning sporting clubs after taking out two FNQ titles at the weekend.

“The Port Douglas Crocs won their fourth straight AFL Cairns title in a row and the Mossman Sharks won back-to-back CDRL titles for the first time since the club joined the competition in 1955,” they said in a statement.
Deputy Mayor Abigail Noli said the Port Douglas Crocs and Mossman Sharks were heart-warming fantastic success story for the Douglas Shire.

“Once again, these clubs have taken it to the rest of FNQ and given everyone another reason to believe Douglas Shire is the greatest place,” she said.

“The talent we have for our population size is unbelievable.

“Hopefully the Douglas United Football Club can get up in a fortnight and make it a trifecta for Douglas.
“These success stories are an invaluable advertisement for our region, showing locals love living and tourists love visiting,” she said.
