Wonga Beach fisherman jailed for rape of a minor

A 35-year-old Wonga Beach fisherman has been sentenced to three years imprisonment for multiple charges of rape and indecent treatment of a child.


The man faced Cairns District Court on 24 October on four counts of rape and seven counts of indecent treatment of a child under 16 and under 12.

The offences were alleged to have occurred to one female victim over multiple years, between 1999 and 2007.

The victim was aged between nine and thirteen years at the time of the offences.

Judge Vicki Loury sentenced the man on two counts of rape to three years imprisonment with the sentence to be suspended after 18 months.

He also received 18 months imprisonment for one count of indecent treatment of a child under 16 (procure to commit), under 12 and 12 months imprisonment for five counts of related indecent treatment of a child under 16, under 12, all to be served concurrently.
