Long term local icon Nautilus opens doors to weddings

After 65 years in operation, the iconic Nautilus Restaurant in Port Douglas is expanding itself into a wedding ceremony venue.
Raechel-Skye Wearne, the daughter of long-time Port Douglas resident and owner of Nautilus, Grahame Wearne, was the first to plan and hold her entire wedding at the venue last weekend.
Marketing and functions coordinator, Tyha Day, said the wedding was a bit of a test to see how the venue would fair for ceremonies and by all accounts, it was a success.
“It was an absolutely stunning day, just so beautiful,” Ms Day said.
“This was just a small intimate affair with about 50 guests but the venue, with sole use of the restaurant, can accommodate 100 plus.”
Ms Day added that in the coming year the restaurant is looking into creating wedding packages so that people can not only continue to have their receptions at Nautilus but also their ceremonies.
“It’s not only a stunning venue but is also really convenient too because you can have the ceremony and reception all in one place.
“The location is perfect too because it is in the middle of town but is also completely removed from the main street below and feels like your stepping into this lush tropical setting.”
The restaurant first opened its doors in Port Douglas in 1954 and Ms Day said it has had a colourful history frequented by many celebrities and even had a presidential visit.
“It’s become a bit of a go-to when visiting Port Douglas, so is the perfect place to hold your wedding,” she said
