Organisers of the annual Jungle Ride plan to meet with Council with a view to moving the event to a cooler time of the year.

Now into its 11th year, and supporting local charity KIND (Kids in Need of Donations), the ride attracted 209 riders this past weekend and raised $19,000.

Describing the event as “amazing” based on what was raised for the charity and its overall organisation, Jungle Ride and KIND president Danielle Bellero said she intends to approach Douglas Shire Council and request the event be held during Carnivale.

“I would definitely like to see it moved to a cooler time of the year and late May, when Carnivale takes place, would be ideal.

“Staging it at this time of the year can be extreme, weather wise and for this reason we would prefer a cooler time of the year. The event would also add an excellent attraction to the Carnivale calendar,” said Ms Bellero.

“This was one of our best rides and we were fortunate to have 60 dedicated volunteers who did an exceptional job.

“Once again our ride ambassador, Stu O’Grady, proved to be a popular feature as he rode with many of the cyclists and shared his incredible experiences,” she said.

Ms Bellero was pleased to reveal that $45,000 had been raised over the past two years.

KIND was established in 2008 in the Douglas region as a not-for-profit organisation, by local people for local people, to raise, administer and distribute funds to assist children in need of support who have been diagnosed with a terminal or debilitating illness or injury.

Discreet, immediate, short term and long term support is provided by KIND to assist affected children and their families.

Monies are primarily raised through fundraising ventures, community donations, assistance of other agencies and grants.

KIND provides a bridge between the child’s needs and the assistance provided via other external agencies.

KIND aims to provide help where government and/or other agencies are unable to so.

From its starting point at Port Douglas Sports Complex, the ride takes participants through 90km of stunning tropical rainforest to Cape Tribulation. Riders can extend their commitment and take on the 120km half-return ride back to the ferry or the full return loop to finish off an epic 180km ride.
