Wacky beers and costumes are the flavour for Hemingway’s What the Funk? Festival

Hemingway’s Brewery will represent Port Douglas at the inaugural What the Funk? Beer Festival in Cairns on Saturday.
Craft brewers and distillers from across the region will come together at Hemingway’s Brewery at the Cairns Wharf to showcase their specialty brews in a swinging 70s themed party.
Participants include Hemingway’s Brewery Cairns and Port Douglas, Macalister Brewing Company, Barrier Reef Brewing Co, Coral Sea Brewing Co along with Mt Uncle and Wolf Lane distilleries.
Hemingway’s Marketing Lead, Alex Loughton, said the Port Douglas brewery is where they develop their small run specialty beers and for this festival, they have been busy creating their new Lock Stock ale.
“It is a barrel aged Belgium specialty ale made in two used Mt Uncle Whisky barrels for flavour infusion,” he said.
Mr Loughton added a festival like this is all about supporting local industry.
“It is a great example of the industry coming together and showcasing high quality produce.”
CEO and co-founder of Hemingway’s Brewery, Tony Fyfe, said What the Funk? follows hot on the heels of the successful Cairns Craft Beer Festival held in May this year.
“The response to Cairns Craft Beer Festival showed a strong appetite for showcase events with a laid-back vibe,” he said.
“For the beer lover, we will be showing off some really ‘funky’ beers ; think sours, barrel aged and Belgian style beers; along with the usual favourites for those with timid tastebuds.”
The festival will have a 70s psychedelic vibe and promises a fun afternoon of back catalogues and tasty brews on the waterfront.
“This time around we have opted for a wilder and slightly wackier event with one final craft beer celebration before the year ends,” Mr Fyfe said.
There will also be live music, prize giveaways, and delicacies from the BBQ Smoker on offer from 11am on Saturday.
