Taipans head coach to give Douglas Heat special training

The Douglas Heat Basketball club has landed a significant coup by luring CQ University Cairns Taipans Head Coach Mike Kelly to take Saturday’s sessions at the Cyclone Shelter stadium on 4 Endeavour Street, starting at 9.00am.
Kelly’s presence on Saturday is part of the club’s undertaking to bring in a specialist coach each weekend.
His coaching background includes Assistant Coaching roles with the Wollongong Hawks (2006), Vanguard University (2007-08), Utah Valley University (2009-13), the Townsville Crocodiles (2013-14) and Melbourne United as Associate Head Coach (2015-17).
Douglas Heat head coach Steve Hull said this endeavour of inviting top coaches goes a long way to guiding and teaching our local volunteers the latest training methods and techniques.
“This new model the club has adopted has been made possible through a grant from Douglas Shire Council and the exposure is a huge benefit to the local community,” he said.
Hull said there is no greater thrill to see the large number of kids that come out to learn and play basketball.
“There have been occasions when we’ve had 73 kids on one court. It’s also possible to have 100 attend a Saturday session,” said Hull.
First up on Saturday (at 9am) will be the Aussie Hoops U10 Girls and Boys, followed at 10am by the U13’s mixed.
Everyone attending Saturday’s sessions, is encouraged to bring along their favourite Taipans gear for Coach Mike to sign.
Hull said that if you are interested in playing basketball for the first time or even becoming a coach/volunteer, you are welcome to attend Saturday’s sessions.
Based in Port Douglas, Douglas Heat is a basketball club for kids aged 5-15 and adults from the Douglas Shire of Far North Queensland.
