UPDATE 4.00pm:

Two women have been taken to Cairns hospital following a two-car collision on the Captain Cook highway. 

Traffic is flowing again through the area though motorists are warned there may be delays as the crash site is cleared. 

Emergency services are on the scene of a two-car smash on the Captain Cook Highway between Wangetti and Ellis Beach.

Queensland Ambulance confirmed two female patients, both in stable condition, are bring assessed at the scene.

It is understood the accident occurred just after 2.00pm this afternoon though exact circumstances of the crash are unclear. 

The Department of Transport and Main Roads have advised both lanes are closed to traffic and commuters should allow for delays on the road.
