The Port Douglas and District Combined Club (Tin Shed) has finally won their battle with Council after Councillors approved the construction of a new upper floor at the existing club at Tuesday’s Ordinary Council Meeting in Mossman.

This will mean a second storey featuring a restaurant and deck will be part of the approved plans.

And Council is currently looking at longer term solutions for more car parking to assist with all businesses and visitors to Port Douglas.

“This is has been a long battle over more than two years and I am delighted with the result,” said Tin Shed General Manager Kym Rowley, who earlier this year announced he would be running for Councillor in next year’s March local government election.

This decision by the Councillors and Mayor over-ruled the recommendation by Council staff that the Development Application be refused.

Council staff listed a number of reasons for the refusal, including:

The proposal conflicts with the Overall Outcomes of the Community and Recreational Facilities Planning Area Code:

a) It does not reflect contemporary community needs insofar as it does not provide adequate on-site car parking to accommodate visitors; and

b) It has the potential to affect the amenity of adjacent areas by placing pressure on off-site parking areas including surrounding streets.

“I am happy that we reached a positive result after all this time and we can move ahead and Council is looking at the parking issue which has long been a stumbling black,” said Mr Rowley.
