Green thumbs at the ready for Douglas Garden Awards

GARDENING

The Douglas Garden awards are back for a second year and Costa’s beard, with the celebrity gardener attached, will again be visiting the region.

TV gardening personality and veteran of the ABC’s ‘Gardening Australia’, Costa Georgiadis, will help judge the awards.

The launch of the competition calls on local gardeners to ‘let is grow’ with Mayor Julia Leu encouraging seasoned and budding gardeners to showcase their talents.

“The Douglas Garden Awards are a perfect excuse to dust off the secateurs and make our beautiful shire even more enchanting,” she said.

“I am encouraging all those passionate green thumbs to tap into that backyard creativity and make our region flourish.

“The inaugural awards were extremely well received by the community who were enthusiastic about showing off their innovative natural areas.”

There are eight categories for the awards including:

  • Residential Garden
  • Acreage Garden
  • Edible Garden
  • Sustainable / Environmental
  • Professional Gardener – Residential / Other
  • School
  • Childcare centre
  • Landcare / Farm

Entries will officially open on Monday 3 June and close on Friday 12 July to ensure gardeners have sufficient time to prepare their lush gardens.

Judging will start on Tuesday 30 July and will run through to Thursday 1 August.

To help make the awards the best they can be, Council is seeking sponsorship of the awards in the coming weeks.

Interested businesses and individuals who want to be part of the Douglas Gardening Awards can contact Council via their website.
