Two Cooktown men have been charged with traffic offences after a drunken learner driver became bogged in a grassy area along Endeavour Valley Road.

Police were conducting routine patrols on the road at about 2.30am on Saturday when they called for the driver to pull over the car.

Police allege the driver crossed the road in an attempt to evade police but quickly became stuck in the mud on the road’s grassy shoulder.

Police spoke to the driver and determined he was the holder of a learner permit and when he undertook a breath test, allegedly returned a reading of 0.25.

Officers then spoke to the man who was supervising the learner driver and he allegedly returned an alcohol breath test of 0.18.

The driver was charged with high-range drink driving and failing to produce a learner’s permit and the supervising driver was charged with being in charge of a vehicle whilst under the influence of liquor.

The two 47-year-old men are scheduled to appear in the Cooktown Magistrates Court in April.
