A 23-year-old woman has been murdered and a seven-year-old boy seriously injured in a domestic incident in Kowanyama overnight.

Addressing the media in Cairns today, Acting Detective Inspector for the Far Northern District Michael Gooiker said a 29-year-old man has been charged with murder today.

Police were called to the address at about 1.00am this morning after the woman was conveyed to the Kowanyama Health Clinic by members of the community.

She was pronounced deceased on arrival at the clinic having sustained stab wounds to her neck and upper torso.

DI Gooiker said police allege a knife was used during the incident.

The seven-year-old boy, who was allegedly found at a neighbouring address, was flown from Kowanyama to Cairns hospital in a serious but stable condition.

DI Gooiker said he could not reveal the exact relationship of the people involved but confirmed there was a family relationship.

The man was taken into custody after presenting at the police station and is expected to be charged with a number of other offences relating to the incident.

Extra police and detectives have been sent to the small Cape York town to help support the shocked community.

Two crime scenes have been established in relation to the incident and investigations are ongoing.
