Seeking interest in accommodation along Wangetti Trail

The hunt is one for an ecotourism operator to build new accommodation between Palm Cove and Port Douglas along the new Wangetti Trail.
The call went out today from the state government looking for an established tourism group interested in operating eco-accommodation along the trail.
The tender outline calls for business to register their interest in developing and operating eco-accommodation and tour guidance along the trail.

The successful applicant would be granted national park land for eco-accommodation development and ground leases for a term of up to 30 years plus one up to 30-year option to operate the private eco-accommodation.
Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said ecotourism experiences and tours by first nations people would be a feature of the new accommodation.
“We committed $36 million in the State Budget to build the trail,” she said.
“Now we are looking for proponents interested in operating the trail’s eco-accommodation and conducting guided tours with the traditional owners.”
Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the expressions of interest should demonstrate a willingness to converse the natural wonder of the region.
“We want to ensure that treasured natural and cultural assets on and around the Wangetti trail are protected, conserved and presented for the enjoyment of current and future generations,” she said.
“We want authentic ecotourism adventure experiences with quality accommodation and amenity for visitors.
“This project [the entire trail] will create up to 150 jobs and pump more than $300 million into the local economy in years to come,” she said.
Construction is already underway on the first section of the Wangetti Trail from Port Douglas to Mowbray North, with the entire trail expected to be completed by 2022.
Business looking to register their interest in the new accommodation tender can do so on the Queensland Government's tenders website until 2.00pm Thursday, 25 July.
