Local artist Leanne Emmitt did not hide her elation when she was announced as one of a few recipients of a Regional Arts Development Fund grant.

“I am thrilled to be a recipient of one of this year’s RADF grants. Receiving this grant will allow me to further develop my ideas in relation to the Call of the Running Tide Environmental Art Festival and to fully explore the potential of the mediums I am working in,” she said.

Ms Emmitt, a Douglas Arts Base (DAB) member, said many hours of work goes into the development and creation of a project such as this and it is awesome to have her part acknowledged as a worthwhile proposal and to receive the financial support to back it up.

“I am greatly honoured to receive the grant and to be a part of such an exciting project.

“Many thanks go to the Queensland Government, Douglas Shire Council and all those individuals involved in making the RADF grants available and this Festival possible,” she said.

Ms Emmitt can pride herself on being chosen from one of the largest pool of applications in years. Douglas Shire Council was awarded $52,177 through RADF, which is a State and Local Government partnership between the Council and Arts Queensland to support local arts and culture in Regional Queensland.
Fifteen projects were selected and are tipped to tell important local stories and enrich culture in the Douglas Shire.

Grant recipients ranged from the several artists involved in the 2019 Environmental Art Event, ‘Call of the Running Tide’, to local authors and schools.

Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu, who sits on the RADF committee, said all art submissions were very worthy of funding.

“I am delighted by the exciting array of activities to be funded by the RADF program over the coming months, from funding for artists projects, including the upcoming ‘Call of the Running Tide’ Environmental Art Event for September 2019, to workshops and cultural heritage projects,” she said.

Ms Emmitt said the money received will go towards concept and design development; production costs and installation and maintenance costs (for the duration of the festival).

In describing what she will be working on, she said the aim of the Call of the Running Tide Environmental Art Festival is to highlight our unique local environment and to bring awareness to the issues impacting on it.

“I will be producing two works that address the issue of insect decline – the possible causes and the potential impact both locally and globally:

1.‘Preserve and Protect’: an exhibition-based work that will explore the nature of metamorphosis with a series of Origami insects displayed at various stages of transformation – creation or deformation.

2.‘Tread Lightly’: an ephemeral piece made up of a series of larger than life insect images stencilled onto the ground that will gradually disintegrate with human interaction over the course of the exhibition.

“I hope to bring attention to both our individual and collective impact on this critical aspect of our ecosystem,” she said.

Cr Leu added the quality and diversity of our local arts community is a constant source of amazement.

“I’m very proud our Council has such a strong partnership with the State Government to deliver these significant arts projects through the RADF program.”
