Council votes to go ahead with carbon offsetting plan

Douglas Shire Council have voted to join the Healthy Reef Partnership including engaging in a carbon trading scheme with the County of Rawbelle, inland from Bundaberg.
The plan had the support of all Councillors at today's Council meeting except Michael Kerr who spoke passionately against the proposal and gained a round of applause from the gallery of which about 30 residents attended.
The newly endorsed deal will see Douglas Shire Council partner with Qantas Future Planet, GreenCollar and Tourism Port Douglas Daintree (TPDD) to gain carbon neutral status in Douglas and help reduce overall emissions.
According to Council’s report, the partnership enables Council to become carbon neutral by purchasing premium carbon offsets located in Rawbelle.
