Fullback Matthew Gibuma was again the toast of the Mossman-Port Douglas Sharks when he scored four tries in their 30-6 win over Southern Suburbs in this Round 13 fixture of the Cairns District Rugby League (CDRL) at the weekend.

It’s been a fairy tale season for Gibuma, who has scored close on 20 tries, averaging two per game.

His ability to outsmart the opposition and overall consistency has played a key role in a team that lost their first three games, and are now unbeaten in their last nine matches.

The Sharks, with 18 points, sit on top of the ladder with Brothers and Yarrabah next best on 16 points.

Sharks coach Brian Murgha was full of praise for his team and how they have turned their slow start to the season to one which sees them leading the competition.

“The attitude among the players has been exceptional. They want to enjoy each other’s company and play for each other. There is a wonderful camaraderie which sets the tone,” he said.

The Sharks are at home to Atherton on Saturday (6pm) and although they do not want to get ahead of themselves, they are hoping to continue their form in their next few games and defend their premiership title.

Last year, the Sharks won its first CDRL premiership in 20 years beating Tully 36-12 in the grand final.
