Interstate cyclist pronounced dead at traffic incident

Police have confirmed a cyclist who collided with a truck on the Captain Cook Highway between Mossman and Port Douglas has died.

Preliminary information suggests the 53-year-old Victorian man was riding with a group of cyclists on the Captain Cook Highway, near the Mount Molloy turnoff at around 7.50am.

It is believed some of the cyclists came into contact with each other and the man veered into the path of on-coming traffic with initial investigations suggesting he has struck a vehicle.

A 4WD has been seized by police in relation to the incident. 

Emergency services attended however the man was pronounced deceased at the scene, his name has not yet been released.

Investigators from the FCU are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam vision to contact them (details below).

This death brings the road toll to over 100 deaths on Queensland roads so far this year.

About a quarter of the 2019 road fatalities in Queensland occurred on roads in the Northern part of the state, an almost 10 per cent increase on the average over the 2014 to 2018 period.
