Students at Alexandra Bay Primary School can now cross Hutchinson Creek in safety thanks to a new footbridge.

The bridge was completed last week after it was announced in last year’s budget as part of a $6.8 million Civil Works spend by Douglas Shire Council.

Council committed $115,000 to replace the pedestrian bridge decking at Hutchinson Creek after residents raised concerns regarding the safety of the old bridge.

The bridge project was driven by the North Douglas Group who liaised with Council over a period of about 14 months to make the project a reality.

Alexandra Bay Primary School Principal, Emma Taylor, said the school community gratefully received the new bridge.

“We absolutely love it,” she said.

“The schools loves it and the parents love it. The new bridge means students can walk or ride their bikes safely all the way to the school.

“At Alexandra Bay, we have a strong focus on road and bike safety and this bridge helps us promote that safety message.”

Ms Taylor also said with the new bridge, more kids could be encouraged to take a sustainable route when going to and from the school.

“We encourage students to think about their impact on the earth and with more students able to walk or ride to school, we can discuss sustainable transport options and put that discussion into action,” she said.

Council’s latest budget includes $15.34 million in capital works across the Douglas Shire region.
