A local business owner has been left with the cleanup bill after vandals left graffiti on the wall of his workshop last weekend.

Andrew Renwick of On the Spot Signs will have to shell out about $900 to remove a tag painted on the outside wall of his Warner Street business.

The tag was left sometime over the long weekend and Mr Renwick said he’s not impressed with the handiwork of the vandals.

“It’s a pretty rare occasion something like this happens and it’s a good wall but it looks bad when it has graffiti on it like this so definitely better to remove it,” he said.

“We reported it to police via PoliceLink and then Dan McLeod, one of the the local Senior Constables, came and had a look.

“He said was going to keep an eye on the cars around town and keep an eye on any more that pop up.

“Apparently there were some small cases around the corner near Calypso as well.”

Port Douglas Police Senior Constable, Maddie Meadows, said graffiti in Port Douglas is very rare and this is only the third instance reported to police in the last 12 months.

“We get minor graffiti sometimes, usually around school holidays and it is usually an out-of-towner, it’s not a thing we normally get,” she said.

“There are a few little tags getting around because we just had school holidays but they will soon disappear and it’s unlikely to be a local offender.”

Mr Renwick said he wanted to let people know that his workshop had been tagged to warn other businesses in case they were vandalised as well.

“It’s a pain but if I’ve been tagged I want to let people know they are going around doing it and so people can keep an eye out for it,” he said.

“Hopefully we can find the person or people doing it.”

Senior Constable Meadows also encouraged anyone who notices tags around town to report them to the police so they can be investigated.

If people do see anything usual, please report it and it would be great if anyone has CCTV footage to come forward as well,” she said.
