The annual Mossman NAIDOC street parade saw people from across the Douglas Shire flock to Front Street this morning to celebrate Indigenous Culture.
Schools, community groups, and individuals all took part in the parade, which Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu said was the biggest one yet.
“It was a fantastic parade and the biggest ever I think; it was so great to see so many young people and schools participating and all the great banners,” she said.
“It is a really awesome way to finish a successful Mossman NAIDOC week and I want to congratulate all the organisers and the many people who put this together; it’s a huge job.
“It was also great how many people lined Front Street and cheered everyone along and the retail spaces that took the time to put out decorations.”
Mayor Leu said the whole week of events has been incredible and everyone involved should be proud of the effort and execution of the celebrations.
“Larissa Walker and the whole team at Mossman NAIDOC were incredible, Ebony Shollenberger did a great job MCing at Monday’s flag-raising ceremony, Alexis Ryan is wonderfully running the family fun day today and Uncle Ray did a great job with the welcome to Country,” she said.
“It’s a really important way of bringing the community together and at the same time focusing on what we need to ensure in the future we treat each other with respect, acknowledge our history, and work together on cultural recognition.
“This year’s theme of Voice. Treaty. Truth. is a particularly important theme in 2019 and we need to make sure we never forget but learn from history how to make a better community we can all enjoy and all be treated with respect and all have opportunities to thrive.”
