A council spokesperson said the work planned at Diggers Bridge includes pulling up the existing road where it meets the new road (the approach roads either side of the Mowbray River) and then shaping and grading.

“Work was scheduled for this week, however, this was postponed a week due to the wet weather forecast.

“Weather permitting, the new road and crossing should be open Sunday, 20 January, however, we advise residents to check the VMS Boards and council website for updates,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added there was no date for an official opening.

It has been suggested (by locals) that Council liaise with the local Mowbray community to ensure all parties are well represented at the opening.

This has been one of the most controversial and contentious projects in recent times and in May last year, a month before the start of construction, Mowbray locals questioned Council’s commitment to the environment.

The residents challenged Council’s lack of consultation; there were threats to block the roads by protesters; “Save the Raintrees” posters were placed on trees, and there was confusion regarding how many raintrees would be removed.

With the project now on the verge of completion, one local said; “it’s done and dusted. Let’s all move on, have a memorable opening which we can all enjoy, and celebrate the new.”
