EXTREME WEATHER

Last updated:

Recent wet weather and forecast heavy rainfall has delayed the opening of Diggers Bridge for at least a further week.

Mowbray River Road will be closed to all traffic at Diggers Bridge until at least Friday, 1 February, 2019.

Meanwhile, a monsoon trough dumping rain across the far north has a high likelihood of developing into a cyclone on Australia Day.

The weather system is located 110 kilometres northwest of Weipa and is tracking towards the South East.

Heavy rain is expected to batter Port Douglas over the weekend and into next week as Northern Queensland faces the trough.

Port Douglas is likely to the heaviest rain over the weekend with falls in excess of 100mm predicted for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Mossman is also expected to have a wet weekend with rain fall up to 200mm predicted for Saturday.

The Mossman and Daintree rivers have been issued a flood watch warning by the Bureau of Meteorology.

The BOM is predicting heavy rain, which may lead to flash flooding, across far north Queensland from later this evening.

With catchments across Cape York becoming wetter following rainfall over the past few days, river rises and flooding more likely with heavy rainfall.
