Your say on Queensland's environmental protections

Queensland residents are being encouraged to have their say regarding protection of the state’s biodiversity as the population and economy grows.
All residents can contribute to a discussion paper regarding the state’s environmental offsets framework.
Minister for Environment Leeanne Enoch said the paper will inform government on areas for improvement where a balance needs to be struck between growth and the environment.
“We will be looking at outcomes that have already been delivered to make sure they are providing a net benefit for Queensland’s biodiversity,” she said.
“We will explore options to improve the framework where required and this is isn’t about stopping infrastructure.
“I want Queensland to be a leader in the environmental offsets field, and we will be working with key stakeholders to identify what is working and what is not.”
Ms Enoch said it’s vitally important the Queensland government provide environmental protections while encouraging growth and prosperity.
“I am also committed to ensuring that all options to avoid or minimise impacts to the environment are considered first as part of the development assessment process, before environmental offsets are considered,” she said.
The discussion paper can be viewed on the Queensland “Get Involved” website with the deadline for responses falling on close of business 15 April 2019.
Following the release of the discussion paper, the Queensland Government will also work with representatives from local government, business, industry and the conservation sector to address any issues that are identified.
