UPDATE:


Both patients who were trapped in a vehicle on the Captain Cook highway this afternoon have been freed from their vehicle.

A woman, believed to be in her 40s, has been extracted with chest, arm and leg injuries and has been airlifted serious but stable condition to Cairns base hospital.

The south-bound lane of the highway has been opened to traffic but the Department of Main Roads and Transport are still on scene directing traffic.

Motorists can expect long delays as crews work the clear the scene of the accident.

EARLIER:

A woman remains trapped in a crashed car on the Captain Cook Highway and it believed to be in a serious condition with with leg, arm, and chest injuries.

A man in his 40s was freed from the car earlier and has been airlifted to hospital in a stable condition.

The road remains closed to traffic in both directions as emergency personnel attend to the scene of the accident.

EARLIER:

Emergency services are currently on the scene of a crash between Wangetti and Ellis Beach where two people are trapped in a vehicle.

Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed a man in his 30s and woman in her 50s are conscious but currently encapsulated in their car.

It is understood at about 1.48pm, another car on the road clipped the patients’ car, sending it careening into an embankment.

The Captain Cook Highway will be closed to traffic in both directions while crews work to free the trapped people.
