New fitness program for Douglas Shire to get people moving
HEALTH
A healthy funding grant has paved the way for the introduction of a fitness program focusing on the elderly and those keen to overcome inactivity.
Port Douglas and Mossman residents will benefit from the $14,040 funding received by the Douglas Shire Council through the North Queensland Sports Foundation Health and Well-being project to deliver an entry-level fitness program targeting seniors and inactive members of the community.
Council anticipates the program will start in October and run for up to 20 weeks.
Douglas Shire Council Mayor Julia Leu said she was proud to be able to bring a fitness program back to the shire.
“Many local seniors have been asking me about bringing back a dedicated fitness program, which we held a few years ago until funding ran out.
“It is really fitting to announce this fantastic initiative during 2019 Seniors’ Week when our community is embracing physical activity and social connectivity,” she said.
The program is designed to establish a link from community health and wellbeing to local sport and active recreation communities.
Local seniors are invited to free walking hockey activities and an introduction to a Petanque session to be held at the Port Douglas Community Hall.
See Council’s website for the full Seniors’ Week schedule.
