Now with Queensland and New South Wales’ popular NRL codes holding their Grand Final today, this weekend has now cemented itself as Australia’s biggest sporting weekend.

Our recent Newsport survey asked Shire locals and weekend visitors from Cairns and interstate where they will be watching the AFL and NRL Grand Finals.

Heading up the list is probably no surprise to those who watched last years finals or many of the years other major sporting events is The Central Hotel. Turning 140 years old next Saturday the Central Hotel is equipped with two large digital screens and the atmosphere to boot.

Private GF Parties is second on our list. It’s becoming increasingly Australian to watch major sporting events now on ever increasingly sized home entertainment flat screens with the BBQ and esky’s close by.

New on this years radar as a major events venue is Hemingways Brewery. Holding dedicated AFL and NRL GF parties Hemingways is sure to capitalise on its spectacular marina water-view venue, delicious menu, local craft brews and popular selection of wines and sparkling.

Traditionally in the TOP 5 The Court House Hotel like its sister pub, The Central Hotel, will not disappoint as a major events venue. With its ever-impressive lunch menu The Courty provides both a great pre-game meal and cold beer venue for both GF’s.

Still boasting the spoils of its new renovation this will be Paddy’s Irish Bar’s first GF weekend since its immaculate transformation into one of the towns bigger major events venues. You will never see more smiles on the faces of the staff at Paddy’s. Be sure to try their famous ensemble of ‘wings’ if you are after the luck of the Irish for your Grand Final team.

Rounding out our TOP 6 venues for GF weekend is Rattle n Hum. No need for underdog status here, as ‘Rattle’ is no stranger to hosting major events. The major sponsors of Port Douglas’ triple flag and reigning FNQ AFL premiers The Crocs you will be sure to run into our local hero’s here today and tomorrow. Slide into a few game day pizzas today fresh from the largest pizza oven in town.
