Truck crash kills two on the Kennedy Highway
DOUBLE FATALITY
UPDATE: The two heavy vehicles involved in a double fatality on the Kennedy Highway this morning are currently being loaded onto tow trucks and will be heading down the Kuranda Range.
It is expected they will commence travelling at approximately 3pm and could take up to an hour to travel down the range.
The Kuranda Range will be closed until approximately 4pm to facilitate the movement of these vehicles safely.
"Travellers are urged to use alternative routes or delay their travels until the road reopens," said a Queensland Police spokesperson.
EARLIER: A truck crash has killed two people on the Kennedy Highway near Mareeba.
Police and emergency crews have been on scene since 7.25am after a fatal smash involving two heavy vehicles at Tichum Creek.
The Kennedy Highway, between Koah and Mareeba, is still closed and is not expected to re-open until 4pm today.
“Police would like to thank motorists for their continued patience and recommend motorists seek alternate routes until further notice," a Queensland Police spokesperson said this afternoon.
Emergency services and Road Tek crews are currently maintaining traffic control at the crash site.
Police said a number of logistical issues will impact traffic once the road re-opens.
“There may be delays on the Kuranda Range throughout the afternoon whilst a heavy vehicle is transported down the Kuranda Range to Cairns,” the spokesperson said.
The Kuranda range remains open to Koah, however vehicles are unable to go any further west than Koah.
On the western side of the crash site, vehicles are being turned around near the double overtaking lanes close to the Termite Fruit and Veg Takeaway.
