New ‘market square’ an option for waterfront

DOUGLAS Shire Council has unveiled a third major revitalisation concept for Port Douglas in less than two weeks.
The 'full potential' of the Port Douglas waterfront near the Marano's petrol station and Closehaven Marina will be explored after a draft blue print was tabled yesterday.
Council said in a statement the land planning exercise in the 'Port Douglas Waterfront South Precinct Master Plan' will look to create a more defined tourism and seafood precinct and provide more certainty for the local commercial fishing industry.
It comes as the town awaits word of a development application from Crystalbrook Collection at their nearby superyacht marina in Port Douglas.
It also follows Council's plan to upgrade Warner Street and potential improvements to Macrossan Street based on community feedback.
“Port Douglas must remain a competitive and contemporary destination that is supported by a vibrant waterfront," Mayor Julia Leu said.
“This planning also provides greater certainty and incentive for private investors such as Crystalbrook Collection, which has committed to a landmark redevelopment of the nearby Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina."
Council, along with a host of locals and visitors to the area, believe part of the town's charm involves enabling visitors to watch trawlers unloading their catch through an active seafood industry.
A retail and tourism market square with car parking spaces is just one the ideas outlined in the draft, which is open for public consultation.
The preliminary concept masterplan study takes in stakeholder consultation, environmental, economic, marine and geo-technical and traffic engineering investigations.

Mayor Julia Leu said Council wanted to 'hear from everyone' and was open to all ideas from the community.
“The success of this precinct will be linked to involvement from the local community, businesses and tour operators," she said.
“Council is setting the scene for a prosperous Port Douglas and everyone has a chance to shape this long-term vision."
