Mayor hoping for silverware as towns rally behind sporting teams

DOUGLAS Shire Mayor Julia Leu is hoping for three premierships tomorrow as the region prepares to cheer on the Port Douglas Crocs and Mossman-Port Douglas Sharks.
The Sharks are hoping to break a 20-year title drought when they face Tully in the CDRL grand final on Saturday night, while the Crocs' seniors and reserves grade teams are vying for AFL Cairns flags at Cazalys Stadium.
The Douglas Dragons are also in action tonight at the Port Douglas Sporting Complex in a crunch soccer semi-final against Mareeba.
Mayor Leu said she could feel the buzz around town and was hoping all three clubs can bring home silverware.
"The Douglas Shire is right behind the Mossman-Port Douglas Sharks and Port Douglas Crocs this Saturday," Mayor Leu said.
"It is absolutely fantastic to see sporting success stories come out of Douglas Shire. Their success helps put our little region on the map and reminds everyone just how good we are up here."
Council's Mossman administration building is currently decked out in sky blue and dark blue in support of the local teams, while decorations can be seen in shop fronts in both towns and along Port Douglas Road.
The Crocs are chasing their third straight AFL Cairns premiership when they do battle with Cairns Saints, while the reserves take on Pyramid.
"This is a really historic moment for these clubs,” Mayor Leu said.
