THE Kuku Yalanji are a proud people.

They’ve lived in the Daintree Rainforest for more than 50,000 years and are renowned for their spiritual connection to the land around them.

Their dreamtime stories are the stuff of legend, yet their traditional method of cooking remains a relative unknown part of their rich culture outside of the tribe.

That is until now.

On Saturday night, the Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort in Port Douglas is celebrating the tradition of the Kuku Yalanji people with a magical evening set within its ancient history.

Underground Gourmet will deliver food cooked in a Kupmuri underground oven by the original inhabitants of the land. And by food, they mean a full wondrous feast and historical culinary journey.

“It’s going to be such an authentic experience of the Kuku Yulanji culture,” Christina Ingram from the Sheraton told Newsport.

“A great amount of detail has gone into this event behind the scenes with the local people involved.

“It’s been a wonderful journey developing a relationship with the Kuku Yalanji people and we’ve built a real rapport them."

The exclusive event will include local traditional descendants and storytelling, performances and music, along with a traditional smoking ceremony.

Emerging aboriginal artist Davinder Hart will be creating one of his acclaimed artworks live on the evening, which is shaping as a truly significant experience.

“They are very proud of their traditions and culture so it was important for this to be as authentic as possible,” Ingram said.

"There has been no stone left unturned to create a truly memorable evening."

Limited tickets can still be purchased for Underground Gourmet on Saturday 29 September (6pm-9pm). Tickets are $149 per person and $74.50 per child.

People are encouraged to meet in the Sheraton Grand Lobby by 6pm sharp to ensure they receive ‘the full cultural and food experience’.”
