NQ Civil Contractors Pty Ltd has won the design and construction contract for the $1.8m Noah Creek Bridge Renewal Project.

Mayor Julia Leu said the renewal project would secure the longevity of the self-drive tourism market, grow small business and support residential land values in the area.

“We know most tourists enjoy leisurely drives under the stunning rainforest canopy to visit our pristine beaches and access majestic board walks,” she said.

“That area north of Noah Creek is a vital part of that experience, which sustain tourism and preserves employment in the area.

“Many locals make money selling food, providing wilderness accommodation, transport and other services to visitors who come to experience our World Heritage rainforest.”

There are 127 properties north of Noah Creek and 81 properties in Cape Tribulation. Noah Creek Bridge is located on the Cape Tribulation Road between Cape Tribulation and Thornton Beach and was built by the US Army Corp of Engineers during the Second World War.

The latest bridge inspections revealed the crossing is in poor condition with severe damage from cyclones and floods.

Mayor Leu said Council would ensure vehicle access across Noah Creek is maintained through the construction period.

“Noah Bridge is a critical asset for the owners of residential and business assets in Cape Tribulation,” Mayor Leu said.

“Most businesses depend on the tourist dollars and would not be viable without Noah Bridge.”

The final design and permits are expected to be finished by May next year. Douglas Shire Council was successful in securing 75% of the estimated cost under

Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund.
