Ryan Melchert, who works for Mackay Sugar in Mossman, has been named the 2018 Electrical and Refrigeration Apprentice of the Year after winning a TAFE Queensland Trade Excellence Award.
The TAFE Queensland student received his award at a recent special ceremony at the Cairns campus.
Melchert works for Mackay Sugar and he is studying two qualifications, a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician and a Certificate III in Instrumentation and Control and said the award came as a shock.
Ryan is the son of Terry Melchert, a former Douglas Shire Council CEO and Councillor. “We are real proud of him and what he has achieved,” said Terry.
“I was pretty surprised that I won, it feels good. My supervisor is really happy I received this award and it’s good news for our small town,” Ryan said.
Melchert received a framed certificate, a handmade trophy and an industry prize, donated by Haz-Elec Industries.
“I got an electricians combo kit and I’m really happy with it.
“I don’t have a multimeter, so it’ll be a big help to me I’ll use it to test equipment and for fault finding purposes,” he said.
TAFE Queensland Acting General Manager, Ian Smythe, said the Trade Excellence Awards celebrated the achievements of outstanding trade students.
“We received more than 40 nominations across eight award categories and more than 100 people from across the far north attended the ceremony,” Smythe said.
“All of the finalists were selected for showing great commitment to their studies, a strong work ethic and for making a positive contribution to their workplace.
“Ryan’s teachers describe him as a high achiever and an excellent student, making him a very deserving winner,” he said.
