A 66-YEAR-OLD man has died in an ultralight plane crash near Port Douglas.

It's believed the man is a long-time resident of the Douglas Shire but his name has not been released. It's still unclear if his family has been notified of the tragedy.

The aircraft crashed into the Paddy's microlight airpark, 2km north of Port Douglas, around 5.30pm yesterday.

The man was rushed to hospital following the crash, however it’s believed he died at the scene. He was the only person on board the aircraft.

The wreckage at the crash site has been cleared and the Forensic Crash Unit are continuing investigations into the incident, assisted by the Recreational Aviation Australia and the Australian Transport Bureau.

"The crash unit worked into the night and will continue with their enquiries," a police spokesperson told Newsport.

"It appears to have been a tragic accident."

Multiple fire trucks, police and emergency services were called to the scene yesterday afternoon, along with a rescue 510 helicopter.
