More than 250 competitors from the State’s northern-most surf clubs descended on Palm Cove this weekend for the North Queensland Branch Championship Carnival 2018.

Hosted by reigning champion Cairns Surf Life Saving Club, the two-day carnival included Port Douglas, Ellis Beach, Etty Bay and Mission Beach clubs vying for the top spot in their branch.

North Queensland Branch President Graeme Boothe said nippers, seniors and masters competed in individual and team events including Ironman, surf races, tube rescue, belt races, beach sprints and flags.

“The Sunday competition kicks off at 7.45am with the much-loved U-8 to Masters All-Age relay where the race gets faster and faster with each age group.

“Each club will then flew their colours at the traditional March Past."

The historic March Past celebrates 100 years in Queensland next year.

“This was the last official competition on the branch calendar with nippers vying for a position on the North Queensland Branch Youth State Team to compete at Burleigh Heads next March in the Queensland Youth Surf Life Saving Championships.

“Many competitors will go on to the North Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships (North Aussies) in Mackay on October 26-28, where the Queensland Country Junior representative team is selected for the Queensland Interbranch Championships.”

Cairns Surf Life Saving Club has retained the North Queensland Branch Championship trophy for 2018 winning the Juniors, Seniors and Masters categories, and gaining the most points to be the overall winner.
