Cyclones will become more intense in Douglas Shire says Mayor
CLIMATE
DOUGLAS Shire Mayor Julia Leu has said strong scientific evidence suggests that sea levels will continue to rise and coastal lows and cyclones will become more intense in Douglas Shire.
“And Council is preparing the region for any potentially significant impacts in future years through intense consultation and giving the community a platform to explore options for adaptation,” she said.
In preparation, a project team, tasked with understanding of coastal hazards on the Douglas Shire coastline, will hit the road to Cape Tribulation this week.
Douglas Shire Council’s Resilient Coast team will host a second round of workshops to share their findings and ask for community input in Mossman, Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation.
The team will then be finalising the Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy (CHAS). Mayor Julia Leu, who recently attended the Climate Council’s Cities Power Partnership Summit in NSW, said Council was leading the way for coastal adaptation.
“Strong scientific evidence suggests that sea levels will continue to rise and coastal lows and cyclones will become more intense in Douglas Shire,” she said.
“I strongly encourage all Douglas communities to attend these workshops and share their local knowledge to help us build a more resilient Douglas,” said Leu.
The following will be addressed:
• A discussion on coastal values and issues of concern
• Displays and maps to view – storm tide inundation & coastal erosion
• A short presentation from the project team
• A discussion on possible adaptation options
• The opportunity to share your thoughts.
