Community takes steps to finding Toyah’s killer

MEMBERS of the public are set to scour Wangetti Beach and the surrounding bushland this weekend where 24-year-old Toyah Cordingley’s body was found just nine days ago.

The “Wangetti Walk” will see the young woman’s family and friends, along with members of the public, search the Wangetti Beach area armed with metal detectors, drones, and other equipment in the hopes of finding clues to Ms Cordingley’s final moments.

The event has attracted almost 950 interested parties on Facebook with many people leaving messages of support on the event page.

The event has been organised in conjunction with the ongoing homicide investigation being conducted by Queensland Police detectives.

Ms Cordingly was discovered by her father near the Wangetti Beach southern access point around 7.45am on Monday, 22 October after she was reported missing the previous night.

Police have released CCTV stills showing Ms Cordingley shopping in the Cairns CBD and leaving Cairns via Clifton Beach on the day she was killed.

Detective Inspector Sonia Smith said police released the CCTV images in the hopes it would bring forward further witnesses who saw or interacted with Ms Cordingley on 21 October.

“Toyah was wearing light coloured crocheted singlet top and carrying a large striped colourful bag when she was at Rusty’s Markets and she was there for just over half an hour,” Det. Insp. Smith said.

“It is possible that Toyah changed clothes after leaving the markets.”

Police are also appealing for any images or photographs taken in the Wangetti Beach area on Sunday, 21 October and are asking all members of the public to report any persons with unexplained injuries or damaged or missing clothing, and for any dash-cam footage from people traveling between Cairns and Port Douglas that day.

Police are also especially interested in speaking to a family who were believed to be at the Wangetti Beach car park at about 1.20 pm on Sunday.

“Initial information suggests [the family] interacted with a couple and their dachshund (sausage dog) in the southern car park, and that the dog attempted to hop into the family’s sedan,” Det Insp Smith said.

“We’re hoping this piece of information may prompt their memory.”

Those wishing to join the “Wangetti Walk” can meet participants at the Ellis Beach Bar and Grill at 7am on Sunday, 4 November.
