The walk will be followed by guest speakers, information stalls and a water station. Funds raised will help support the campaign to stop violence against women.

The Australian Human Rights Commission says Australia has a disturbingly high rate of violence against women.

“In recent times, policy and public discussions on violence against women in Australia have had a strong focus on family and domestic violence, in particular intimate partner violence. 

“However, consultations conducted by the Commission indicate that violence against women can take many forms, including family and domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment, violence in residential settings and online violence and harassment.”

According to statistics from White Ribbon Australia:

• 1 in 4 women have experienced emotional abuse by a current or former partner since the age of 15
• 1 in 5 women have experienced sexual violence since the age of 15
• 1 in 2 women has experienced sexual harassment during her lifetime
• On average, one woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner
• Almost 40% of women continued to experience violence from their partner while temporarily separated
• 1 in 6 women have experienced stalking since the age of 15.
