PARENTS in the Douglas Shire have reacted with disgust to footage of a violent fight that emerged from the grounds of the Mossman State High School yesterday.

The 30-second video shows one girl being dragged to the ground by her hair before being punched and kicked repeatedly by another girl.

The video has been shared widely among the community on social media since it was recorded on Thursday, 8 November.

Parents in the region have reacted strongly to the video of the fight.

A concerned mother described the footage as "horrifying" but said her kids are desensitised to violence on school grounds.

"I felt sick to think that was happening at my kids' school, it's just awful," she said.

"For my poor kids, that’s almost normality to them and it doesn’t affect them much because things like this happen all the time.

"This is the third incident of violence I know of this week."

Parents were also disheartened by the lack of official response from the school more than 24 hours after the incident occurred.

"I have personally spoken to the school and I've urged them to send some type of communication to families assuring they are addressing the situation but we have heard nothing," the mother said.

"The school has got to do something about this but they haven’t."

Another parent, who also wished to remain anonymous, said they send their kids to school in Cairns, despite living in Douglas Shire, because Mossman High School has previously had serious behaviour issues.

“We know parents who send their kids to other schools because of this type of behaviour,” he said.

Another parent said the footage was all the proof they needed to look elsewhere for their child’s education.

“I found this footage very disturbing,” they said.

“That this could happen in a place where children should feel safe and supervised.

“It cements my decision not to enrol my child at this school if this situation is not addressed"

Newsport understands one girl from the video has been spoken to by police.

Queensland Police and Mossman State High School are yet to respond to inquiries from Newsport regarding the incident.
