Electricity provider Ergon Energy has urged those with advanced medical equipment to have emergency plans in place during the summer months.

The sole electricity distributor in Far North Queensland is warning people the summer storms will bring unexpected outages that will effect consumers.

“Summer is notorious for severe weather and while we have a very robust power network in Queensland, lightning, high winds and flooding can interrupt the electricity supply,” Manager of Customer Operations at Ergon Cloe Kernick said.

“Severe tropical cyclones have the potential to take out community infrastructure for many days.”

Ms Kernick said it’s important for anyone who relies on electric medical equipment have a plan in place for when power supply is disrupted.

“It is ideal for anyone in need of powered health equipment to have a comprehensive plan in place to enable them to get through the period without electricity or have enough time to seek medical assistance,” she said.

Those who do rely on powered medical equipment can register with Ergon Energy to be notified ahead of planned outages.

Medical equipment that qualifies for Ergon Energy’s Life Support Program includes:
- Oxygen Concentrator
- Intermittent Peritoneal Dialysis Machine
- Kidney Dialysis Machine
- Chronic Positive Airways Pressure Respirator
- Crigler Najjar Syndrome Phototherapy Equipment
- Ventilator for life support
- Any other equipment a registered medical practitioner certifies is required for life support.
