Community asked is Cairns Ironman event still good for Port Douglas?

DOUGLAS Shire Council is undergoing an assessment of the Cairns IRONMAN with a major focus on whether local businesses benefit from the event which is held in June each year.
In June this year Ironman, Chief Operating Officer, Shane Facteau welcomed the announcement by the Queensland Government, and the Cairns Regional Council that the event would continue in Cairns for another 5 years until 2023.
“Douglas Shire Council is gauging how Ironman benefits or impacts businesses in the region,” said Mayor Julia Leu.
“The information will form part of our review of financial and in-kind support for the event, which is up for renewal.
“This is standard procedure when Council reviews an event that it provides support to,” she told Newsport.
Council committed to a three-year funding agreement in 2015 for $50,000 and $10,000 in-kind per year.
Port Douglas had a number of competitors in this year’s event. Locals Simon Mulligan, Amanda Fraser and Leigh Brown all took part in the full Ironman event, while Jodie Keirle, Jo van Ewyk, Brian Collyer, Damien Passlow and Mark Geddes went around in the 70.3 event.
It attracted thousands to the region while hundreds lined the streets in Port Douglas as the cycling leg rode through town.
Locals are encouraged to complete a six-question survey, which closes on Friday 16 November.
Some of the questions include: Does your business benefit from the Ironman event during the Douglas stage of the event (Sunday)?; If your business does not benefit, what are the impacts?; Would you support the Ironman event continuing in its current format in the Douglas Shire?
