Victorious Reef Raiders run in six tries against Mudcrabs

RUGBY UNION

THE Port Douglas Reef Raiders rugby union team is fast becoming a side to be reckoned with and on Saturday they showed their ascendancy when they defeated the Mudcrabs 32-24 at the university fields after leading 15-10 at the break.

This was a lively affair and both teams did not hesitate to run the ball in this 10-try fest. The Raiders crossed over on six occasions while conceding four tries.

“We have clearly turned things around. We are getting good numbers to our training sessions and this is providing us with an ideal platform,” said club president Donny Murday.

“Coach Dave Pearse is slowly putting his mark on the team and the players are responding well.”

In a match against the more fancied Mudcrabs, Raiders captain and loosehead prop Dylan Leahy produced an overall outstanding performance in all facets of play and was well rewarded with two tries.

The Raiders dominated the breakdowns which paved the way to victory.

The Raiders fielded two juniors in this match and both proved themselves against a top-rated team.

This weekend, the Raiders are at home to JCU at the sporting complex. Kick-off is at 3.30pm.
