THE launch of Carnivale 2018 is being complemented by the lifting of the stinger nets at Four Mile Beach, according to the head of Queensland Lifesaving.

Rob Davidson said the factors were in favour of removing the nets as there is now a limited threat of irikanjis posing a problem for swimmers.

In what has been described as a relatively uneventful season in terms of anyone being stung, Davidson said the smarter and more sensible approach was a major factor in fewer incidents.

“The relevant stakeholders have been advising their visitors to swim between the nets and follow the advice of the lifesavers. These are key factors and extremely positive,” said Davidson.

He added that despite the fact that the water temperature had dropped and the weather is no longer conducive for stinger activity, the lifesavers would continue to monitor the area.

“I guess you can say the timing is perfect with the kick off of Carnivale on the same day we are lifting the nets,” he said.
