Local cyclist ready for week-long cancer ride

PORT Douglas cyclist Rob Cooke will set off on a gruelling week-long ride from the Sunshine Coast to Cairns tomorrow to raise money for cancer care.
Cooke is one of 10 cyclists riding an average of 200km a day to drum up funds for charity organisation COUCH.
All money raised will go towards the COUCH Wellness Centre being built in Cairns for cancer patients, survivors, carers and family.
"The opportunity to participate in the 2018 Couch Ride will be an incredible physical challenge as well as being very rewarding to support such a worthy local charity," Cooke said ahead of the ride.
He started cycling for fitness and met a great group of 'like minded people' after moving to Port Douglas almost 30 years ago.
"I've joined Michael Bowmaker on many extended charity cycle rides and have had a fantastic time," he said.
"It's going to be tough but I'm very much looking forward to it."
The ride takes off from the Bloomhill Cancer Care Centre in Buderim tomorrow and ends in Cairns on Saturday 26 May.
The riders will be celebrated at a special gala event from 6pm at The Cotton Club.
