Towering over Dixie Park on the Port Douglas waterfront is a surprise from the 5th dimension. Image supplied.

Anybody noticed the skyline over Australia's most visited destination wedding church and old sugar wharf?

You may have seen the strange, tall and awkward looking structure you simply cannot miss but think 'oh wow' as you start to soak in the anticipation of Carnivale 2018?

If amusement rides are your thing (come on whose aren't?) and if you were at Carnivale 2008, you’ll recognise that the Sling Shot is back after a 10-year hiatus and is expected to draw crowds to this exhilarating ride.

Among the many highlights Carnivale brings to Port Douglas every year, this could emerge as the eye-catcher and something that will first intrigue, and then entice.

The mighty Sling Shot provides a thrill-a-second, but be warned if you wear a pacemaker or scared of speed and heights.

The Sling Shot is by far one of the most exciting vertical amusement rides around standing at 45 meters tall.

Up to two riders at a time lie on their backs and face the sky, they are then propelled more than 60 meters at speeds of up to 160 km per hour.

Don't miss out, tickle your wild side and try the Sling Shot Friday night during the Tropical Magic Street Parade.
