With some 35 floats converging on Macrossan Street as one of the key events of Carnivale 2018, the large crowd was treated to an ideal start to what traditionally heralds the tourism season.

And there was an eclectic selection of floats which grabbed the attention of the many children who came out to enjoy something different and a memorable spectacle.

Some of the floats included Belly Dance with Rochelle, Sabor Dance Company, Dougies Backpacker Resort, Cairns & District Chinese Association, Douglas United Football Club, Julatten State School, Mossman Gorge Centre, Port Douglas State School, Quicksilver connections, Hemingway’s Brewery, Coles Port Douglas, and Sizzling Wheels.

THE WINNERS

Douglas United Football Club was judged the best community float; the best commercial float went to Dougies Backpackers Resort and the best overall float was Sabre Dance Company while Floral Edge was highly commended.

Douglas Shire mayor Julia Leu said the street parade set the tone for the weekend and it has been reported that some 10,000 people lined the street to watch the progression.

“The parade was just fantastic, the community really got behind the event and the effort the participants went to with the costuming, music and decorations was just outstanding,” said Leu.

Councillor and Deputy Mayor Abigail Noli was equally generous in her praise saying that the parade was clearly one of the highlights.

“Overall, I thought Carnivale was a huge success which drew many people from within the shire and tourists as well,” said Noli.

“I would, however, like to see more floats in the parade with schools, sporting clubs and more locals encouraged to participate.”

Organised by Douglas Shire Council, Noli said there would be a de-brief and like anything, there is always room for improvement. She added that Council could continue to organise it and can look back on a successful event.

This is the first year that Carnivale has been organised by Council.
