Crocs ready to 'turn the Port pink' in bumper top-of-the-table clash

THE Port Douglas Sporting Complex will be a sea of pink tomorrow for the annual Pink in the Tropics charity match between the Crocs and Cairns Saints.
The top-of-the-table clash has coincided with Port’s biggest home fixture in honour of women battling breast cancer, giving it a genuine big game feel at the Croc Pit.
Crocs assistant coach Wes Glass, fresh from a successful coaching performance with the Cairns All Stars team last week, said the club was proud of its annual Mother’s Day round fundraiser.
“It’s a credit to Chris (Port Douglas president Chris Bradsworth), the Board and the whole club. They’ve started something that everyone wants to be involved in,” Glass said.
“The crowds are getting bigger each year, the Pink in the Tropics breakfast keeps getting bigger – I think they’ve got 160 booked tomorrow.
“It will be one of the biggest home crowd’s we’ve had I reckon, so it’s going to be a big day.”
Adding to the hype is the scintillating form of the Cairns Saints, who appear back to their best in 2018 and are gunning for the reigning premier.
Glass had a first hand look at seven of their best players while leading the All Stars to victory over the Indigenous representative team on Saturday.
“It’s going to be a huge challenge a really great spectacle, I think it will be a very good game to watch,” he said.
“They’ve been beating teams pretty easily this year, recruited well and have some good players back.
“It’s going to be a fierce contest and it’s all for a good cause.”
Both the Crocs and Saints remain undefeated after five rounds and are on a collision course for bigger things later in the year.
SAINTS ARE 'DEFINITELY HUNTING FOR US'
Cairns Saints currently hold top spot with a healthy percentage of 268.68, with guns Thomas Eltringham (26 goals), Cade Wellington and Jack Philp in hot form.
Star Port Douglas forward Mitch Bohm believes the Saints will be primed for the clash.
“We had a good look at their good players in the All Star game on Saturday night, and they look strong,” he told AFL Cairns TV yesterday.
“We’ve obviously been top spot for a long time now and they’re definitely hunting for us.
“So it’s going to be a good challenge and I can’t wait for a big crowd and turnout on the day.”
Bohm has been dominant this season with 22 goals - the most of any Croc - and would be one of the early leaders in the Crathern Medal.
He said the club was keen to perform in the annual Pink clash, which also doubles as the club’s Ladies Day.
The Crocs will wear custom-designed pink jumpers while the crowd is also encouraged to ‘rock up in pink’ for the day.
“I think it’s great, it’s for cancer obviously and it’s also good seeing something different in local football,” he said.
“It would be good to see it get higher in the ranks of the AFL. It’s a massive day for the club.”
