DOUGLAS Shire Council will extend concessional travel on the Daintree ferry for another 10 months in a boost for Douglas Shire cardholders.

Douglas Shire Council has extended the current period, which was due to expire next month, until 30 April 2019.

Eligible cardholders living north of the Daintree River can also buy another book of visitor tickets during this period.

Mayor Julia Leu said the free extension would benefit residents and ratepayers.

“This is a big boost for concession cardholders,” she said.

“Concessional travel allows regular eligible commuters to travel on the ferry at minimal cost to provide a significant social benefit, particularly to those people living north of the Daintree River.”

Council said the renewal of concession cards will be advertised in April next year. Cards issues will be valid for two years and the renewal process in April 2021 will take into account any changes required under the new ferry services contract, which will come into effect July 1, 2021.

It comes after a fare increase of one dollar was confirmed for the ferry.
