THE Hot Cross Bun is Good Friday essential, but what exactly makes a great bun? We talked with Nigel from Mocka's Pies and Bakehouse about his secret to making a fluffy and full of flavour hot cross bun.
Mocka's might be famous for their award winning pies, but we've all noticed the amazing pastries and breads on the other side of shop.
Nigel and his team know exactly how to tingle our sweet taste buds and, in the lead up to Easter, we are treated to a selection of delicious treats for the whole family.
When we asked Nigel what makes a perfect hot cross bun the answer was short and sweet (pun intended!) "
"Use good quality ingredients for the best result. The ingredients is not an area to be stingy with as this shows directly in the end flavours," he said.
After a little chat we dare to ask THE question on everyone lips: What is the secret to Mocka's perfectly fluffy and full of flavour Hot Cross Buns?
Surprisingly, Nigel does not hesitate to answer and tell us not one, but two secrets. First, they have been nurturing their own 'culture' sour dough mother which adds depth of flavour. And secondly, Mocka's uses real butter which keeps them lovely and moist.
After the mandatory taste test we can definitely agree to this. Still fresh out of the oven these are the fluffiest and tastiest hot cross buns we have ever tasted!
Admitting to have only tried supermarket versions before we all agree there is nothing better than a real bakers hot cross bun!
As for how to enjoy your hot cross bun there is a million ways and opinions out there, but Nigel advised to get them fresh from the bakery, still warm if possible or warm them up at home with a swipe of butter, or like his partner finish it off with a drizzle honey.
Mocka's Pies and Bakehouse sells traditional, fruit free, chocolate and a special adults hot cross bun. The adult version is a rye and current bun with a dash of Shiraz and dark chocolate. On top of this there is Easter cupcakes, chocolate tartlets and a special Easter Vanilla Slice!
Luckily they're open all weekend from 7am till around 3pm so there is still time to get your Easter weekend treats!
