THE maintenance of the Daintree ferry is on schedule but Council could not say whether it would be completed inside of the scheduled five days.

“From discussions yesterday it is progressing on schedule, but it is probably too early to know at this stage if the work will be done any quicker,” a Council spokesperson told Newsport today.

An initial external inspection indicated no major damage to the ferry.

Mayor Julia Leu, who watched on from the Daintree River yesterday, said the dry-docking was exceptionally successful and crews have worked on minor repairs.

“This was an almighty task. It was truly spectacular and impressive to watch this mammoth vessel being towed onto dry land,” she said.

“The sheer logistics of hauling this huge ship is something the contractors and their crews should be congratulated for.”

Mayor Leu said Council ‘whole-heartedly’ appreciated the inconvenience caused by the temporary closure and has put in place extensive plans to minimise disruption.

The ferry’s closure has sparked heated debate from a number of circles, none more so than Leichhardt Federal MP Warren Entsch, who slammed Council for a lack of consultation with the community.

Entsch also reignited the issue of whether a second ferry should be added or a bridge constructed across the river.
