POLICE and emergency services are yet to locate a vehicle that was last seen entering floodwaters near Mossman early this morning.

A search and rescue operation was launched after a ‘white coloured vehicle’ reportedly drove into floodwaters near Foxton Bridge on the Mossman-Daintree Road at 1am.

A witness told police the car was not seen exiting from the other side and feared it may have been washed away.

A swift water rescue team and emergency 510 helicopter were deployed from Cairns and local police and SES crews have been searching the area on foot.

“However no evidence of any vehicle or persons was located,” a police spokesperson said today.

“Police crews will monitor the area throughout the day, however at this stage it appears that the vehicle was able to negotiate the floodwaters and continue north, and was not washed away as initially thought.”

There have been no missing persons reported or anyone overdue from local road trips, according to police.

Mossman and Port Douglas has copped a drenching in recent days with a number of roads closed due to flooding.

Authorities are urging motorists to heed road closures and not to attempt to negotiate flooded crossings.

“With the heavy rainfall presently being experience across the far north, drivers need to exercise a great deal of caution and restraint,” the spokesperson said.
