WILDLIFE officers have removed an aggressive saltwater crocodile from Ferndale Lake.

The 2.7 metre croc snatched a pet dog on Tuesday and had evaded capture for over a month at the residential Port Douglas lake.

The animal was forcibly taken in the early hours of Saturday morning with rangers using baiting techniques to lure it in.

“DES wishes to thank Queensland Police and local council officers who provided invaluable assistance with the operation,” A Department of Environment and Science spokesperson said today.

It’s believed the DES and local police were left frustrated by public interference during the removal efforts following three nights of active patrols.

“People are reminded to never interfere with crocodile traps or the activities of wildlife officers during operations such as crocodile removals,” the spokesperson said.

“This behaviour poses a serious safety risk to the members of the public, DES staff and even the crocodile involved.

“Pet owners are also reminded to keep their pets on a leash while walking their dogs in croc country.”

The crocodile will be relocated to an unconfirmed crocodile farm or zoo.
